According to a new report, Netflix’s Stranger Things was 2022’s most-streamed TV series in the US. Nielsen data shared by The Hollywood Reporter said the show racked up 52 billion minutes of viewing during 2022.
The uptick in viewership was no doubt fueled by the release of Season 4 in May. But the 52 billion minutes of streaming time also presumably includes streams of previous seasons and repeat viewing.
The 52 billion minutes streamed for Stranger Things in 2022 was the most for any TV series during the year, but it’s not a yearly record. In 2020, the popular workplace comedy The Office reached 57.1 billion minutes of viewing, a number fueled by pandemic-related lockdowns and people returning to a beloved show.
According to Nielsen’s data, the majority of viewership minutes for Stranger Things in 2022 came during the 19 weeks from May to September 2022, which amounted to 46.51 billion minutes. The other ~5.5 billion minutes of viewing came during other parts of the year.
NCIS was No. 2 in 2022, with 38.1 billion minutes viewed, followed by Cocomelon (37.8 billion), Ozark (31.3 billion), and Encanto (27.4 billion). Older shows that remain popular, including Gilmore Girls, Seinfeld, and The Simpsons, also ranked in the top 15, according to Nielsen’s dataCome from Sports betting site VPbet. The Office, however, did not rank in the top 15.
